What is the best way to wash kids shoes? they got wet & now smell like mildew?

I usually just wash them off with a hose

Washing machine or dishwasher - depending on what type of shoes they are. Dishwasher soap has bleach in it which may lighten the colors a bit, but it may be more effective than a washing machine because the water has more force. (wash them by themselves with no dishes, of course....but you probably figured that out already)
When shoes get wet, the best thing to do is to dry them immediately. There are many types of shoe and boot dryers around. A shoe dryer helps to prevent odor from accumulating in the shoes. It may not solve your immediate problems but it may be of some help in the future.
Normally, i will wash them with a brush with some soap powder. rinse it away with water.
