If you let your towels air dry, or you hang them to try, they water will only soak in and form mold and mildew. A dryer helps them to try completely and avoid this problem. just make sure the towels are dry before you place them in the laundry bag. they use alot of detergent.

You can be getting the mildew smell in your towels after you washed them by not drying them in proper circumstances.


If that would be the case you gotta make sure that whether you dry them in a drying machine till they are completely dry or you hang them to dry out side or in a room that is properly aired and doesn't have the mildew its self.
bleach. might also turn all your precious towels white.
Wash them in HOT water, use fabric softener, and dry them on high for 70 minutes.
By taking them from the washer immediatly. IF it is your washer that is doing it- Try running it through a cycle with just vinegar and no clothes. This may help. Good Luck!

hang them up to dry, when they are almost dry, run it through the dryer for about 15 minutes with a dryer sheet. This worked for me when I was having this problem.
use baking soda in the washer.
You can use mild bleach (this kills any mildew spors) in the wash cycle along with a good detergent and a scented fabric softner. Make sure you dry them conpletly in the dryer.
After you wash them Dry them and hang them up instead of putting them in a closet. If you do fold them and put them in a closet put some bounce sheets in the closet too.
Always hang them nicely after using in the bath/shower. And make sure they are dry before they hit the laundry basket. For colored towels you can use hydrogen/ peroxide bleach (powder or liquid, available in groceries) to clean with detergent so the colors don't run and can get rid of the mildew smell. In the really hot summer you can dry them outside after spinning in the washer. The sun is really good at killing germs/mold/mildew plus it gives your laundry a different kind of fresh clean smell.
wash them on hot with detergent and make sure they are fully dry before folding them. if they still smell like mildew it may be where you are storing the towels. sometimes cupbards mold.
When I lived in Texas I had this problem. So much humidity can make a dry towel slightly damp enough to grow mildew. Wash in hot water, bleach lightly if desired, but the most important thing is to not let them sit in the washer (or hamper) wet. Be careful with fabric softener--it smells good, but if used every time it will make your towels less absorbant (temporarily, until you wash again).
Dry the am all the way and hang up after use. make sure you dont have hard water. Also, use a GOOD fabric softener. Even use 2!
