Can you remove mildew stains after clothing has already been washed twice :( ?

I have three baby dresses that were in the bottom of a hamper with a wet towel on top. Anyway, I washed it once and of course the mildew stains stayed. Then I bought some stain remover and tried again and of course it is still there. Now I finally came on here to look for solutions and saw a bunch of answers that say to use vinegar, or some say lemon and salt, but I believe those answers were for catching the mildew before you wash. This is my last try. What do you think would be the best way to get rid of these stains, since I've already washed them are they set in? Also one of them is a bright print, the other two are light pastel colored, one print, one solid. Just in case that matters. Thanks for your help. Can you remove mildew stains after clothing has already been washed twice :( ?
Believe it or not..... soak the dresses in a solution of Oxy Clean...

It got india ink that had been washed and dried into a bright colorful bathing suit, and it got rust out of a white satin dress....

It works, as long as you give it the time to do its job....

and it won't fade the color. Can you remove mildew stains after clothing has already been washed twice :( ?
use oxy clean!

Mildew/Moldy smell to clothes left in washing machine.?

I forgot about a load of laundry in the washer for 3 days. When I finally went back downstairs to do another load, the smell was aweful. I know that I could probably use baking soda, vinegar or oxiclean (but how much of the product do I use), and wash with hot water, but I want to know your experiences. There is no (visible) mold spots growing, but I can't stand the smell. Please offer any advice, thank you!

Also, my daughter has very sensitive skin, so I usually wash with the non-fragrant, hypoallergenic detergents. Should I wash these clothes again after using the baking soda, or do you think those chemicals would irritate her skin?Mildew/Moldy smell to clothes left in washing machine.?
This happened to me. I am a student and have now learnt my lesson. Put them on a high wash for as long as possible, with as much powder, confort and liquitabs as you can. Do this twice, put them on a clothes airer in a well ventilated room, then tumble dry with several bounce sheets. Then iron using vaporesse. You can do this all with the normal detergents you use. Thats how my mum fixed mine and it was literally ALL my clothes except one skirt and one top! and my clothes ad been left for over two months, not only did they reek, but they had more mould on them than mould hasMildew/Moldy smell to clothes left in washing machine.?
normal rewashing will kill the moldy smell, this time dont leave them in the washing machine.
Normal washing will not be enough.

Here is what you need to do... I promise:

Wash them again with the normal amount of detergent, and add 1 cup of ammonia to the load. Rinse twice.

They will be good as new... I promise you.
I have had this happen to me all the time. My washer is down in the basement and I forget about them until a few days later. I usually just rewash them. I did have one problem awhile back I had a storge container with some clothes in it some how they got wet.( basement leaks) when I took the lid off the smell about knocked me over from the mold, most of the clothe I had to toss in the trash and wash some a few times.

I would just try to rewash them with soap you use. good luck
I usually just throw them in the dryer and the smell is gone by the time they're dry.

Of course, I'm not sensitive to mold spores. If I was, I'd probably re-wash them and set a timer to remind me to dry 'em ASAP.
We all do this from time to time just rewash your clothes just like you normally would and everything will be right as rain this coming from someone with severe allergies herself
Best bet to get rid of smell and possible mold is to wash with a little (maybe a capful) of chlorine bleach, then wash again in your usual way.
got any baking soda? add to washer and wash again
it sounds silly, but walmart sells a product called ';damp rid'; that is exactly for this purpose! it is gentle for your daughter and i can't say enough good things about it. i make that mistake pretty often (i'm a major scatterbrain) and damp rid always works.
Dryer sheet and dry.
I have done this also.. Take a cup of White distilled vinegar and add it to the wash water...let it go through the cycle...The smell will be gone.....
wash them again
baking soda or white vineager, in wash should do it
I know this happened to me with a shirt...

I just washed it again with normal detergent, and it worked fine. I even had the visible mold spots and everything. Don't know if this is normal, but it worked for me.
It sounds like it wouldn't work, but a little white vinegar added to the wash will help. I use the hypo-allergenic/non-fragrant stuff and once I left the clothes in the wash and just added some vinegar.

It worked really well.

Still use the detergent with the vinegar.

(About 1/2 a cup of vinegar)
wash them again.
i know it happen to my wife she forgot the clothes in the washer for a couple of days and she re-washes the clothes and they were okay
The smell will never leave, throw the clothes in the garbage, or keep the clothes and tolerate the smell. Poo! Woo!

Accidentally left wet towels in the washer and now they are mildewed. Have washed several times...?

and they still stink. Is there any way to get them clean or do I have to get rid of them?Accidentally left wet towels in the washer and now they are mildewed. Have washed several times...?
All those answers are possibilities. The definite answer is, wash them again normally, but add about a half of a box of baking soda. You can add about a cup of vinegar to the final rinse. It'll make them nice and soft. But that has nothing to do with getting the mildew smell out. The towels will not smell like vinegar.Accidentally left wet towels in the washer and now they are mildewed. Have washed several times...?
I would wash with detergent and bleach and choose the soak option. I bleach my towels all the time and they never fade, although they aren't dark colored. White vinegar would work too. I would use about two cups of white vinegar, then wash with detergent. I also use two cups of white vinegar in an empty load about every two weeks. I think it helps my washing machine work better.
You may be able to soak them in a hot water and baking soda solution then rewash them. Even if that doesn't totally fix it, use them as floor mats for the next go round then when you wash again it should take care of it.
I agree with the use of vinegar. Wash them in water and vinegar then later in normal soap etc. and put them out in the sunshine or breeze, leave a little longer outside then you normally would.
Try a color-safe bleach. Otherwise, congratulations, you get to buy new towels and help our shaky economy.
try soaking them in Awesome. you can get it from the Dollar Store or Family Dollar
oxiclean works pretty well.
Try lemon juice if non of the above work.
I'd wash them on hot with a couple of cups of white vinegar. That should do the trick.
just a little bleach when washer fills up

Pressure washing home with mold and mildew.?

Need just a little bit of help.

When I pressure wash my home I just use water with no chemicals or anything like that, and it always comes out looking very nice. I do not have any mold or mildew problems. The pressure of the water on the siding is more than enough. But, I would like to do my mothers home with the same type of siding, but she has green blotches of mold and mildew bad on 2 sides. I am not thinking that water will be good enough.

Is there something that is very safe for plants that I can apply and let sit and then pressure wash as normal ? ? ???

Any advice ? I would like to make mom happy.Pressure washing home with mold and mildew.?
I use a solution of Lysol 4 in 1 solvent and water in a garden sprayer. Spray it on the siding in 20' squares and power spray it off right after. Doesn't hurt plants or animals and removes mold and bird drops. Play with the strength of the mix until the results are achieved.Pressure washing home with mold and mildew.?
I like your idea of water only.

The mold is feeding on the dirt on the siding not the siding itself.

Pressure washing is usually sufficient.

You may have to do the job every few years but poisons are not necessary.

Chlorine is one of the most poisonous chemicals in the world and breaks down into even worse compounds.

Just because something is familiar to us does not mean it is safe.

The plants and animals in the garden will like the water, I doubt they would appreciate the chlorine bleach.
I always use a bleach solution and it works great. A 1:10 ratio will be plenty strong enough and not hurt the siding. However, if she has a lot of sensitive plants at the base of the walls - they may be damaged although with the ration I noted above, it has never been a problem for me.
We used oxyclean for the same problem and it worked great and did no harm to the plants around the area.
just mix 1 cup of Clorox to a gal of water it will do the job and not harm the plants
we had same problem we used viniger and water it did the job

If you pressure wash a car's carpeted floor mat to remove road salt, how do you keep the mat from mildewing

Hang it to dry- also see if it is colorfast. If so a little bleach in the the solution kills mildew. If you pressure wash a car's carpeted floor mat to remove road salt, how do you keep the mat from mildewing
Stick in the sun light and let it dry before putting

it back in the car.If you pressure wash a car's carpeted floor mat to remove road salt, how do you keep the mat from mildewing
Suck as much of the water out with the vacuum at the car wash, or a wet/dry vac. Then place it outside to dry. Do not install it until it is completely dry. You can also clean the floor of the car with a vinegar and water solution to kill any mold that may be there already.
I take mine and let them sit in the sun on a asphalt driveway and they dry out pretty quick. Works good.
Hang it up to dry in the open air.
I'm assuming you can remove the floor mat to do this.

Let it dry in the sun before you put it back in your car. That should eliminate the opportunity for mildew to form.
Be careful, if you remove the carpet and pressure wash it then dry it the chances are it will shrink a little and not fit right.

wash in a weak solution of bleach and water with a little bit of washing up liquid
    just buy a new one
    buy a new one
i had a little dew in my shower? i packed him back off to israel?????????
omg get new ones dude.if washing it wount help what else is left u tell me.
If washing it difn't take it out. time for a new one
Soak it in a bucket of bleach and water overnight, then wash it in the machine, should come out looking like new.
There is a product sold to remove mildew from walls - from the smell it is an ultra strong bleach. It might work on fabric but it could also destroy the plastic if not diluted!

I think you should treat yourself to a new curtain and make sure you dry it properly so you don,t get this problem again.

If you are lazy the best thing is to buy a cheap curtain and replace it as and when.
Try washing it with a little bleach.
Try soaking it in the bath with a bottle of bleach.
Throw it out and get a new one.

If the mold will not come off in the washing machine then it's not going to come off at all.

    Good Luck.
If it has not come out after washing in machine then get down to the shops and pick up a new one!!! :-)
    Deluded bleach
.I use a natural stone cream cleaner , you can find this in some off the big stores or in a few hardware stores, it cleans gold , silver well most metals lime scale, window.s ,stainless steal takes dirty marks of walls well it麓s use is never ending. I麓m sure it would remove your mildew . this product is called Perlglanz Putzstein, my niece introduced this to me and it was a very well appreciated finding for me
    http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/housing/356-643/356-643.html
    dilute bleach
Buy a spray bottle from somewhere like Wal-mart, fill it with bleach and spray your curtain. This will kill the mildew and you should be able to wipe it off after that.

Use caution though when spraying the bleach, don't inhale it and don't get it in your eyes or on your skin.
Use a solution of bleach amd water to get rid of it. Rinse it off with a hose or the shower, and then clean with a solution of warm water and fabric conditioner. (Lovely smell)

What can kill mildew in Washing Machine ?

which method is better? What can kill mildew in Washing Machine ?
Bleach will work, but I always use sodium carbonate (available from the store as Soda Crystals or Soda Ash) for a variety of reasons, not least that NaClO can react with organic matter to form haloalkanes that aren't very good for you or the environment, also chlorine bleach can (when mixed with other cleaning agents) evolve chlorine gas, which isn't good at all!

As stated above, never do this with clothes in the wash! What can kill mildew in Washing Machine ?
a lot of things can kill mildew, but in this case use chlorine bleach the machine was designed for it and it take a relatively low concentration to do the job.
run a cycle with no clothes but just water and bleach. I don't get mildew but my washing machine starts to stink at times, so I do the bleach cycle and the smell goes away.

I left my laundry in the washing machine for a few days and now it smells like mildew. What should I do?

Go ahead and put your clothes in the dryer, they'll be ok.

You may want to run a load of whites using hot water and bleach through the washing machine to get rid of any mold that might still be in it.I left my laundry in the washing machine for a few days and now it smells like mildew. What should I do?
It's likely that you will still notice a mildew smell if you just put them in the dryer. I'd wash them again and add a cup or 2 of vinegar to the rinse cycle.I left my laundry in the washing machine for a few days and now it smells like mildew. What should I do?
if it is a load of white clothes fill with water and add a little bleach and run through the rinse cycle. if it is colored use vinegar and do the same
They should be ok to put in the dryer, then take some wash some towels with some baking soda in the wash water to get out musty smell
Put it in the dryer. It'll be fine.

my wife and i have the same problem

what she found out is to leave the door open after washing ...

it works / ps we also tried to wash with vinegar etc

the only thing that worked was to leave it open

good luckWe have front loader washing machine and it smell like mildew what causes that smell and how do i get rid of i?
What happens is that over a period of time, soap and softener builds up a film on the rubber door boot, and begin to mildew. So wash the door boot off with bleach and from now on try to wipe the boot off when done with your laundry, and leave the door partially open. If I knew what brand it was I might be able to help further. As some manufactures have come up with solutions.

    Good Luck

All the answers here to this question are great. In addition, take out the ';dispenser'; drawer and clean it well with hot water and some bleach. The drawer often has mildew growth on the underside from fabric softener and detergents. You could also run a load empty on hot water with some chlorine bleach after having cleaned the door, drawer, and lint trap.
Clean the filters and door seals, and leave the door open after doing a wash. Check your machine's manual for further details of things like where the filters are located.
i always wipe dry the door and seal after washing

there is a product on the market to help with front loader odours, sorry i can't remember the name

In how many hours after washing will molds and mildew attack clothes that leaves them stink? (slow drying)?

After washing clothes infected by b.o. with baking soda and vinegar, the clothes still stink especially in the under arm. I also sprayed full strength vinegar in the underarm. Vinegar works for me before. The only thing I did is that wash them at night and left them in the clothesline overnight. They are not yet dried until the sun comes out the next morning. What went wrong? In how many hours after washing will molds and mildew attack clothes that leaves them stink? (slow drying)?
Leaving the clothes outside in warm temperatures will make them mildew quickly. In cold weather clothes can stay in a washer for a longer period of time (24 hours or so) without mildewing, but during the summer I have to take them out of the washer within a few hours. Leaving them outside without it being warm enough to dry them will mildew them likely within 3-4 hours. In how many hours after washing will molds and mildew attack clothes that leaves them stink? (slow drying)?
Ok, well first off, the baking soda and vinegar didn't work to remove all the bacteria under the arms. The washing didn't either. Then you left them in the washer 12 hours or so which combined with the bacteria on the clothes, the smell of vinegar, and maybe some detergent or softener residue makes them stink.

It is not the drying process that will be the fault. Best to rewash them in hotter water than normal, skip the vinegar and soda. You might want to run the washer EMPTY one full cycle on hot with a cup of Chlorine bleach added (and some detergent) and TWO rinses then rewash the clothes.

PS, although it smells bad, try using household ammonia on the underarms. Dilute it 10 to 1 with water and dab it on the area. You can use a sprayer if you are careful and upwind. Let it sit 10 minutes before starting the wash. Do this INSTEAD of the vinegar and baking soda.
Molds grow in dark, damp, and cool temperatures. Mildew grows in moist, warm temperatures.

If you cannot machine-dry the clothing, wait until morning to launder the clothing, that way you can line dry as soon as the wash cycle is finished.

You also need to use a good detergent to get the smell out and clean the fabric. Vinegar is good for a neutralizer, but won't leave your clothing smelling fresh and clean.

  • How can you clean away mold and mildew from a cement patio without power washing it?

bleachHow can you clean away mold and mildew from a cement patio without power washing it?
Oh yes, you don't need to ruin the concrete with a power washer. The new O2 systems work pretty well. For example Oxibrands O-2 Algae and Mold remover or Oxi Shield. Check Ace hardware stores.....or was it True Value. These also are gentle to the nearby shrubbery and lawns unlike bleach. How can you clean away mold and mildew from a cement patio without power washing it?
Mix a few good swigs of bleach in a bucket of water and simply dump it on the patio. Use a broom to sweep it off and away goes the mold and mildew with it. Repeat, depending on the size you are trying to clean.
Bleach and detergent will kill and clean the mold off anything.
Fill your bucket with either a strong bleach solution or a mildicide. mop using lots of solution. scrub with a stiff brush where you must (I use one with a long handle..saves the knees)

    rinse thoroughly. Enjoy your patio!!
I have used a spray bottle in the past using a solution of bleach and water to kill the mold and mildew. That will stop the mold and mildew in its tracks!
You can try mopping the patio with solution of bleach and water, but power washing is the best way.
Bleach will kill the mold and mildew. Pour it on or spray it on. Let it sit until you see the mildew lose its color. Then it can be scrubbed with plain water and a good broom. Just keep the bleach away from any nearby plants.

My mom left clothes in wash and they mildewed, and then put them on my baby and baby has a rash.?

and is crying like ive never seen before. what could this be from/My mom left clothes in wash and they mildewed, and then put them on my baby and baby has a rash.?
Ugh....strip baby and give her a bath immediately! Mildew is basicly a fungus growing in wet damp places. Not good against the skin even after it has been dried. You need to take that entire load of laundry and if it's safe rewash it in hot water at least once, twice is better. The rash is bad enough but that could easily lead to asthma or bronchitis if baby is suseptible enough. My mom left clothes in wash and they mildewed, and then put them on my baby and baby has a rash.?
Take the clothes off the baby and put them in the wash for another cycle. In the meantime, give the baby a bath.
ewww. Wouldn't you be upset to be surrounded by mildew, and with a rash. Give the baby a bath and fresh clothes. Next time, if they are mildewed - rewash them!
Um, the smell maybe? Yuck! Give her a warm bath and some fresh clothes.
its because the laundry sat for so long.....next time tell you mom she needs to wash them again. thats not good for baby.

After washing & drying bath towels they still smell like mildew??

Maybe your wash cycle didn't kill the bacteria - add some bleach if you can - as a pre-soak or in the wash cycle - and try again. After washing %26amp; drying bath towels they still smell like mildew??
Have you tried using white vinegar in the rinse cycle? I think that it might help you. After washing %26amp; drying bath towels they still smell like mildew??
This can be an indicator of a potential mold-mildew problem- be sure that the items do NOT remain in the washer for an extended period after the wash has finished-verify that the towels do not have the smell directly from the dryer...

there are a number of things to TRY to get rid of this occurance- from replacing washing machine hoses and any water filters-cleaning the inside of washer-such as the ring under the top of the wash tub and the center fabric softener dispenser, also put a 'damp rid' brand tub(find at hardware store) in the area.

try a mildew-mold test strip from your hardware store, or on the expensive side- contact a Home inspector who provides air quality and mold sample inspections, easy locator ,NACHI.org

Most likely source may be a previous or existing leaky pipe ,sink ,tank etc. that has allowed seepage into or under a carpet where the mildew is hiding, these spores can blow around in the air and a wet towel and such will provide a place to grow quickly , don't be too quick to call it 'mold' -it may be a questionblel 'Microbial substance', until it can be classified as a mold by scientific evaluation after a home inspector sends it out to a reputable testing facility.
Fill the washer with hot water and add your detergent and about a cup of white vinegar and let the towels begin to agitate. Turn the washer off and let them soak for an hour or two then turn it back on and finish washing, adding another cup of white vinegar to the final rinse. You may need to repeat this process a couple of times, but it should take the mildew smell out of the towels. Don't use fabric softener on your towels as it effects the absorbency. The vinegar will make them nice and soft and leave them smelling fresh.

Always hang towels to dry after using them to prevent mildew between washings. Always remove your towels from the washer as soon as the washer is finished and make sure they are completely dry before folding and putting them away.

After you get the mildew smell out of the towels, using about a half cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle should keep them smelling nice and fresh.
I suspect some mildew in the washer and dryer area. Can you spray the area with a mildew remover?
I have had the same problem. I found that if I put some pinesol (any scent you like, I like the blue one best) in the washer with my laundry soap and let the load soak (my washer has a cycle for soaking if not do it manually) it removes the mildew smell.

The smell is coming from the towels as they set on the basket damp, not the washer so bleaching your washer won't help.

I hope this helps. It works well for me.
get some frebeeze and add to the water ,, ,re wash them in that and soap ,, it will take out the smell ,,
Run the wash cycle without any clothes in it and use bleach. That should get rid of any unwanted mildew problems.
just a tiny splash of bleach will not damage colored items and will get rid of problem.....just do it after the wash has started and just pour a tablespoon or 2 in there... i never had a problem doing this.

We have a light, goose down comforter that is very light and comfy but has a terrible smell. The problem may be your washer.

After we wash ours, I spray it with Frebreeze a few times, and it eventually goes away.Help! I've washed our comforter twice and it still has a mildew-like stench that I can NOT get rid of.?
get a bottle of mildew remover like scrubbing bubbles or something and add half the bottle when you wash it!!! it wont bleach it and will smell great
Simple: let it sit in the tub. Make sure its hot water. Then pour baking powder and scrub it a little and then faster but not too fast and then make sure the door is closed. Add the vinegar and there you go!
put it in the washer and fill with water and add about 1 cup of baking soda and let it sit for a couple of hours........ then wash as usual
you can bleach it and the get a duvet cover if it isn't white now. or try vinegar in the wter and dry it thoroughly. or take it to a dry cleaner and tell them about the smell
    Get it dry cleaned....

I have gotten my goose down comforter dry cleaned a couple of times.

I think any place will do it for like under $20.

    Look into it....
I would try washing it again but let it soak first for

about an hour after putting a scant cup of baking

soda in the water. Baking soda removes oders

in refrigerators, carpets etc. so it's worth a try and

    will not harm your comforter...

    Good luck
Add 1 cup white distilled vinegar to the wash. Vinegar kills mildew/mold, and deodorizes. The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.
See if a cleaners can get the smell out.

My 5 year old washing machine has a mildew smell when i leave the lid up.?

How can i get rid of it?My 5 year old washing machine has a mildew smell when i leave the lid up.?
Run a wash cycle using hot water and white vinegar or bleach. Do not put any clothes in there while doing this.My 5 year old washing machine has a mildew smell when i leave the lid up.?
I agree with the first answer. There is also a product called Oda Ban that could be used too. It is a natural product and some hospitals uses Oda Ban. The only place I have seen Oda Ban is Sam's Club or your local janitorial supply store. I use this product in my home. I clean houses and offices and use this product all the time. Also it is a good disinfected.
run a gallon of vingegar thru it
If you run a empty cycle with Bleach and Oxy-Clean That should do the trick!!! Once you get the smell out, leave the lid open when your not using it so the mildew doesn't come back!!!
run the wash cycle with white viniger, it works great for coffee pots also

I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?

I use the machine at least every other day, but at least twice a week this odor is so bad it comes out into the living areas. What could be causing this and how do I fix it?I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?
If the problem is not coming from the discharge hose, the problem could be in the drain itself, and the smell can be gasses backing up from the sewer. Drains have a 'P' or 'U' trap which retains a small amount of water that prevents sewer gasses from escaping the drain. If the trap is leaky and doesn't hold the water, gasses can periodically be ';belched' into your home, causing the odor. If the odor occurs exclusively when you're not using the washer, this is likely the problem.I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?
It could be the pipe the other thing it could be though is a cracked drain pipe water in the walls and mold is growing?. I had an issue with this a few years back and one of my water lines had cracked and was basically a mist was coming in the wall and forming a perfect breeding ground for mold. You may only smelling it when you do the wash becuase the hot water is making a steam and the mold spores is flowing if you can maybe take a look at the pipe make sure it isn't cracked and there are no leaks. If it is okay dump some vinegar down the pipe this should hopefully help with the stence.
Could also pour a cup of bleach down the drain pipe. If you have really low humidity, you could be drying out the water in the trap that should be installed on the drain, allowing sewer gases to escape. Then again, if it's an older house, maybe they didn't put a trap on the line.
Laundry machinery mechanic here. You need to have the pipe brushed, then add a degreaser down the pipe, then run your washing mahine, i know what your talking a bout, i have fixed this many times for laundromats.
I have the same problem coming out of my bathroom sink. I get rid of it by dumping in a 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let sit for a 1/2 hour then rinse with boiling hot water.

I think rubber has the solution. The trap is a necessary part of the plumbing and probably it was not put in. Try sealing the hole with a rag if you do not want to properly seal the sewer gases with a p trap.
I used Drain Care, from Home Depot. Eats away the bacteria in the pipes.

OxiClean will not harm the grass......in fact the grass will probably love it as the product is basically hydrogen peroxide.......all that oxygen will make you grass happy.

I'm thinking there are special hydrogen peroxide cleaners for patios.......but if you've got OxiClean already, go for it!

Try soaking them in white vinegar.

Congratulations on your weight loss! How do i get mold/mildew off of my expensive lingerie? to fragile or washing machine?
Most washer and dryers have gentle cycles just for what you have. If you don't try these cycles you'll never know if they really work. Unless you already have with other clothing you have. Once a piece of clothing gets mold on it, it's difficult to get it out again. So you might as well try the gentle cycle. You can dry soaking and clean by hand and see how that goes. Other wise that's all I have to offer.

I Live in a HUMID HOT area. My washing machine occasionally gets a MILDEW smell...?

I would like for this smell to go away b/c it's funking up my clothing.

What's the best way to do this? Bleach? Baking Soda? Vinegar? Suggestions?I Live in a HUMID HOT area. My washing machine occasionally gets a MILDEW smell...?
Both bleach or a mix of baking soda and vinegar will work!

The difference is...IF you have a septic system, bleach will KILL all the good bacteria that keeps the septic healthy! If you have CITY sewerage, then go ahead and bleach the machine!

If you have a septic system, then stay away from the bleach! Mix 50/50 vinegar and baking soda with 1/2 of a tub of water and let it go through the wash cycle ! once a week actually!I Live in a HUMID HOT area. My washing machine occasionally gets a MILDEW smell...?
I would just pour a bit of bleach in the washer, add some water And run the machine through a cycle.

You could just run a load of clothes that you normally add bleach to.

When done leave the cover of the machine open.

It wouldn't hurt to air out the area where the machine is.

    Do you have a dehumidifier?
oxyclean it is safe and does not hurt the inviroment.
A 10% solution of bleach water will kill more than full strength.

I'd let it dry out then measure out a gallon of bleach and add 9 gallons of water to the basin then let it set for a day. Read your instructions on how to just use the soak option so that your washer doesn't drain or add water....you may have to turn off your water supply then select the soak option and manually add the water/bleach solution.

Make sure it's coming from the washer....

    I'd check the undercarriage too.

Good luck with that...I hate mildew!
Wash with vinegar, then when you are done with washing your clothes, leave your washing machine lid open. This will allow the machine to air out.
1/2 cup of borax in the wash.

1 cup of white vinegar in the rinse.
I live in a tropical area as well and I do two things and they both work. It just depends on if you have a top loader or a front loader.

If you have a front loader - do a wash with just some sheets with a wool wash that has eucalyptus oil in it. It will remove the smells as well as wash your sheets

If you have a top loader - do the same as a front loader just wash sheets with lemon juice and salt. (may need to re wash sheets after).

Been doing this for 5 years. Works wonders, just had to change tecniques b/c changed washing machine type.

bleach is best for killing mildew.

If I wash clothes in bleach, that were mildewed are they safe to wear?

My work uniform was in my trunk for one week and it rained inside the trunk causing mildew on the uniform. I soaked them for 30mins and washed them in bleach. They SMELL fresh but I'm afraid to wear them again on my skin. Is it safe?If I wash clothes in bleach, that were mildewed are they safe to wear?
If you are in doubt, wash them in normal wash again. let it soak for awhile. This should remove the bleach smell and any residual bleach. Bleach in normal use would not harm. My grandma used them when I was small for stained napkins. I don't think it hurt me. I know of people who still swear that cleaning stained teacups by soaking in weak bleach solution is best.

So the choice is yours. If I wash clothes in bleach, that were mildewed are they safe to wear?
If there is one think bleach is great for it is killing mildew. That mildew is GONE. Don't worry anymore. There is not a trace of that mold or its spores on there.
why dont you just throw it out and buy new ones mold is no good!!!!!
    yes
Yes, bleach is such a good sterilizer, that in very small quanities it is used to purify water to make it safe for drinking. How much bleach did you add to your wash? You might want to wash again using just water for another rinse cycle otherwise it could be itchy against your skin depending on how much bleach you added..
1 part bleach to 10 parts water will kill most any thing
Yes, bleach kills everything, there isn't any mildew left in your clothes. If you get rash it's probably from the bleach!
    Yes , Safe and colorless.
The bleach should have killed all the mildew. As long as the signs of mildrew are gonw you should be ok to wear them

How do you get mildew out of your washing machine?

Put it on the longest and hottest wash (90 degrees about), probably wash 1 or 2 cycle, but empty with some washing detergent and fabric softener(to make it smell better). How do you get mildew out of your washing machine?
Run a heavy cycle (no clothes) of hot water with a couple of cups of bleach. That will kill everything in its wake. How do you get mildew out of your washing machine?
    with disinfectant
I'm guessing that bleach would do it.

Run a wash with no clothes in it with hot water and a mild bleach solution, then do a full rinse and that orta do it.
Well thats easy: Wipe out with a cloth soaked in an anti-fungal solution such as undiluted vineagar which you can get from your local chippie mixed with some thick bleach leave for 30 minutes then run the machine at hotest temp but with no clothes When you have completed this get an old towel and place in the machine add your soap powder in the slot and also fill up the compartment that you would normally put your fabric softener in with some more of the undiluted vinegar/thick bleach solution Run a hot cycle When all this is done all will be well again Please remember to wear rubber gloves when using the solutions and always leave the machine door ajar when not in use and this will stop the problem arising again
Run an empty load with bleach only.
Pour in a washing soda solution then set on a hot wash and go.
I agree with doing a hot only wash, however I would add vinegar which is a natural anti-fungal and a good cleaner. Washing soda (sodium carbonate, which is different to bi-carbonate of soda - don't use washing soda in cooking!!!) soda can also be added as it is a natural bleach and also softener. That should help to rid the smell.

You could also try adding some tea tree oil to get rid of the smell.

I hope someone's idea works for you!

    Blessings, Gypsy Queen
With white wine vinegar and bleach , run the machine on the highest setting you have once with bleach and once with the vinegar
clean it with a wet cloth or something like that
Try using a cup of bleach a run it through a reg. wash cycle! You could try letting the water with bleach set for an hour or two before draining!

    Good Luck!
I used bleach in a hot cycle with nothing in it. But call your manufacturer to see if they can help. I had the same problem and I had a Maytag Neptune. They had to come replace the whole boot to stop the problem. It has since had to be replaced due to all the issues.

How to clean mildew off of liner of front loading washing machines?

I had the same problem on mine. I just soaked a rag with bleach and laid it across the mildew, then after a while, it wiped off easily. How to clean mildew off of liner of front loading washing machines?
I forget what brand our is but it has a rubber gasket around the door that has DEEP folds and the water collects in there. We take either a sponge or microfiber cloth and soak up the water when the laundry is done then we leave the door standing open until everything is completely dried out.

Use a diluted water/ bleach solution ( 10:1 ) for mildew that has already formed. Don't make it much stronger. The bleach might affect the rubber. How to clean mildew off of liner of front loading washing machines?
First, try to check online at the manufacturer's website for tips on that. It is a common problem.

In the meantime, to keep the mildew from forming, keep the door the machine open between uses.

  • I have a very bad mildew smell in my house which I think is comming from the washing machine or dryer.?

There is a very bad mildew smell in the house which I believe is comming from the washer and dryer.

Clothing that is washed also has this smell.

Any suggestions?I have a very bad mildew smell in my house which I think is comming from the washing machine or dryer.?
Firstly check where the smell is coming from exactly. If it is the washing machine or the dryer you need to clean them thoroughly and the area around it. I get that at the moment at the place we are living and it is from the air-conditioner. I had to clean the filter and around it and it is now almost gone. Then get an anti-bacterial spray and spray it around. I also burn incense sticks to help with any odours. Or burn any nice scented candles. I would also suggest putting a few drops of essential oils around the area to as this not only smells nice it helps. In regards to the washing and if it's the washing machine that is giving off the smell then clean it and run a wash of Epsom salts through. Check the washing powder or liquid you use and make sure it isn't lavender scented as I have found it leaves a bad smell behind. Good luck. :)I have a very bad mildew smell in my house which I think is comming from the washing machine or dryer.?
There are some disgusting things that go into a washing machine. Dirty socks, filthy underwear and soiled baby clothes can all find their way into the washing machine. Over time, you may begin to notice an odor reeking from the machine caused from a build up of residue. This is a signal that it is time to treat your washing machine in order to keep your family鈥檚 clothes fresh.

    Things You鈥檒l Need:

    1/2 cup of baking soda

    2 cups white distilled vinegar

    Step1

Decide on the source of the smell. Typically the cause is the machine itself, but occasionally the water being used in the washer can be the source of the problem. If the smell resembles rotten eggs, you may need a water filtration system installed. After you eliminate any other possibilities, you can begin the treatment process.

    Step2

Create a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to 2 cups of white distilled vinegar.

    Step3

Begin a wash cycle using the machine鈥檚 hottest setting. As the water rises, add the baking soda and vinegar mixture.

    Step4

Let the washing machine complete a full cycle. If you notice any residue that has been loosened, use a cloth to wipe the surface clean.

    Step5

Run a cold water cycle to complete the process. You should immediately notice that the smell has been neutralized.

    **************************

    Tips :

Washing your clothes on a cold water cycle can help reduce the amount of residue that builds up inside of your washing machine.

If you do not have vinegar available, lemon juice may be substituted.

Avoid using too much liquid or powder detergent in your washing machine. This can cause the washing machine to smell over time.

Empty the washer as soon as a cycle is done to avoid smelly odors. Leaving damp clothes in the machine can cause a build up of bacteria.
It probably is coming from your washer. I would suggest that you put a cup of bleach and very hot water into your washer (don't add any clothing) and wash on the longest cycle. See if that helps with the odor. If not, you should pull the washer out from the wall and check under it for any leaks or seepage that may be occuring.
pull your washer out from the wall and look for leaks, wet floor,and/or mildew. It may also be on the underside of the washer. have a friend help you tip it forward for a good look. If everything seems ok, then run the machine with bleachy water, rinse thoroughly before you do another load.
It sounds like yo have a leak. Check the walls around your washer and dryer. If they are soft you probably have a leak in the wall. It's really important to find it and seal it off. Molds and mildew can make people sick and become ';black mold'; which is dangerous and costly to remove. Good luck,
If you run a load of NO clothes and about a cup of bleach it may remove that smell. I have a front loader and it keeps some water down in the ';boot'; but I run a cup of bleach every week and it smells better.

What is the best way to get a mildew smell out of a nylon handbag that cannot be machine washed?

I came back from vacation in the Caribbean and my Baggalini nylon bag now smells like mildew. How can I get that smell out? What is the best way to get a mildew smell out of a nylon handbag that cannot be machine washed?
Zip up an open box of baking soda in it for 24 hours. Then open it up, leaving the soda in, allow to air 24 hours. If that doesn't do the trick I guarantee it will help a lot. (Unless there were sardines poured in there)

NOTE 4 Lori.... You do Not pour the baking soda into the bag, you leave it in the box with the top cut off. What is the best way to get a mildew smell out of a nylon handbag that cannot be machine washed?
Stay away from sprays and baking soda - it will be very hard to clean the inside of your bag after that.

I've had old smelly bags too and read about putting activated carbon in them. There is a product that you probably know for your refrigerator called Fridge IT odor absorbers. Well, these work really well too inside purses. Heck, I even use these inside luggage when I travel. For your bag, just put one or two inside. No chemicals to worry about and if you have the same success that I did, you'll be sold.

Anyway, check out the company blog - pretty good tips and where to buy. http://innofresh.wordpress.com/
First of all let it air out , you can spray a light mist a vinegar on it and , use baking soda ..If that doesnt work you can get some stuff called Odo Ban . It smells really good and it removes odors from many different things . it disinfects as well . You can buy it at places like Sams Costco Wal Mart ...
Spray it down with white vinegar and let it dry.

Allow it to air out to make sure it is completely dry, then place an open box of baking soda inside it for a day or two.

Can I really put a shower curtain liner in the washing machine to get the mildew off?

I have no idea where I heard this - but I was wondering if it was true?

The liner is quite thin, almost like a garbage bag - I got it from a dollar store so its not like it was an investment or anything....

But boy, it would be nice to know if this was true, ha ha ;)

    Thanks all

    Be well

TinkCan I really put a shower curtain liner in the washing machine to get the mildew off?
I've done it for years on the gentle cycle with a little bleach. I then put it in the drying with a towel or two for a minute or two to absord the dripping and hang it back up. Just like new!Can I really put a shower curtain liner in the washing machine to get the mildew off?
You can put it in the washer, but if it's flimsy chances are it'll fall apart. Another option is to fill up a spray bottle with a little bleach and some water and spray your liner with the mixture. It'll kill the mildew and clean it at the same time, plus you don't even have to take it off the shower curtain rod. Saves time and money.
I've washed shower curtain liners in the washer with a couple of towels. The towels rub against the liner and help clean it. If yours is that thin and bought at a dollar store, I'd just replace it
I do it, it works. Sometimes you have to take it out and refold it to get the insides if you have a small washer. 2 or 3 times with bleach and some detergent works just fine.
I put my in the washer, but they are thicker than yours. I put some bleach and detergent in. I use the gentle cycle.
    no u cant u buy a new one :]

theyre like $1 at the dollar store

Anytime i ever clean an area that has an irritant I always wash my clothes and shower after wards. www.tipnut.com offers lots of variations to chemicals for all cleaning purposes, most are green and hazard friendly, all work great for us.

I have an allergy towards mold, but bleach seems to aggravate my breathing more so.

If your trying to remove mold, you can soak it in vinegar, will take a lot longer to get rid of the mold this way, but less annoying. If your trying to remove mold from a shower, once you clean it, dry the walls and spread car wax over the walls, the water will repel and you will have to work less to keep it clean, for about a year.Cleaning up mildew in the bathroom, do clothes need to be washed?
Spores can go airborne, so you should wash everything in the area. There's also a very effective germicide that is very inexpensive, because it comes concentrated, and you dilute it down. Also, people with allergy issues, are normally not affected by it.
yes, everything in the bathroom has to be washed-towels, the shower curtain, etc. and dried thoroughly.

Try some of the cleaning hints already posted, and you are right to always leave the door ajar. When I first got my washer, I always shut the door and it began to smell, so I never do that now. I was told by a Sears repairman to occasionally wipe the rubber seal in the front with a damp cloth. It does get stained a little and wiping it will help prevent that. And you can always call Sears Repair Depot and see if they have any advice.

    gere
Run a full, empty load with a couple cups of vinegar. If you have the liquid dispensers, make sure you pour it through those as well.
Both the suggestions above are great, but I wonder if your washer is retaining water. Sometimes when a washer spins, all of the water isn't expelled. This could be the root of your problem. And if it is, anything other than getting that fixed, will be a temporary fix. Try running it through the spin cycle without anything in it.

  • How do I prevent mildew smell in my towels after washing?

Normally, if you are using enough detergent, you will not have this problem, assuming you use a dryer. If you let your towels air dry, or you hang them to try, they water will only soak in and form mold and mildew. A dryer helps them to try completely and avoid this problem. If you are still experiencing mildew on your towels and you are using a dryer, try switching to a different detergent or fabric softener. How do I prevent mildew smell in my towels after washing?
Make sure you don't leave them in the washer overnight or for a long period of time. Put them in the dryer as soon as they're done, and make sure to use fabric softener, for the smell as well as static. How do I prevent mildew smell in my towels after washing?
just make sure the towels are dry before you place them in the laundry bag. they use alot of detergent.
USE A LITTLE BLEACH WHEN YOU WASH THEM,GERMS!EEWW,ALSO MAKE SURE YOU DRY THEM AS SOON AS THEY ARE DONE WASHING UNTIL THEY ARE COMPLETELY DRY!AND USE DRYER SHEETS~

BLEACH WON'T HURT TOWELS!!I ALWAYS USE BLEACH ON MY TOWELS,JUST DON'T USE THE WHOLE JUG!!
You can be getting the mildew smell in your towels after you washed them by not drying them in proper circumstances.

If that would be the case you gotta make sure that whether you dry them in a drying machine till they are completely dry or you hang them to dry out side or in a room that is properly aired and doesn't have the mildew its self.
bleach. might also turn all your precious towels white.
Wash them in HOT water, use fabric softener, and dry them on high for 70 minutes.
By taking them from the washer immediatly. IF it is your washer that is doing it- Try running it through a cycle with just vinegar and no clothes. This may help. Good Luck!
Bleach them regularly and dry them after each use.
don't let them sit in the washer...
hang them up to dry, when they are almost dry, run it through the dryer for about 15 minutes with a dryer sheet. This worked for me when I was having this problem.
use baking soda in the washer.
You can use mild bleach (this kills any mildew spors) in the wash cycle along with a good detergent and a scented fabric softner. Make sure you dry them conpletly in the dryer.
After you wash them Dry them and hang them up instead of putting them in a closet. If you do fold them and put them in a closet put some bounce sheets in the closet too.
Always hang them nicely after using in the bath/shower. And make sure they are dry before they hit the laundry basket. For colored towels you can use hydrogen/ peroxide bleach (powder or liquid, available in groceries) to clean with detergent so the colors don't run and can get rid of the mildew smell. In the really hot summer you can dry them outside after spinning in the washer. The sun is really good at killing germs/mold/mildew plus it gives your laundry a different kind of fresh clean smell.
wash them on hot with detergent and make sure they are fully dry before folding them. if they still smell like mildew it may be where you are storing the towels. sometimes cupbards mold.
When I lived in Texas I had this problem. So much humidity can make a dry towel slightly damp enough to grow mildew. Wash in hot water, bleach lightly if desired, but the most important thing is to not let them sit in the washer (or hamper) wet. Be careful with fabric softener--it smells good, but if used every time it will make your towels less absorbant (temporarily, until you wash again).
Dry the am all the way and hang up after use. make sure you dont have hard water. Also, use a GOOD fabric softener. Even use 2!

How do I get the musty/mildew smell out of my front loading washing machine?

Run an empty cycle with vinegar - put vinegar in the machine and also in the soap dispenser. Also the rubber seals around the doors can get really dirty. Get an old rag or towel and clean the door and rubber seals really well getting all the nooks and crannies in the rubber. A lot of gunk can accumulate there! How do I get the musty/mildew smell out of my front loading washing machine?
That smell is called 'scrub' and is similar to a wet wash cloth you leave on the counter for a few days. One remedy is to run an empty load with max water (hot) and a healthy dose of bleach. If your washer has a soak feature use it or else just pause it for an hour or so. After that, run a small load amount of water to make sure all the bleach is removed. How do I get the musty/mildew smell out of my front loading washing machine?
Run a cycle with just bleach and water and that should get the smell out.
    get a new washing machine
To get rid of the smell. first do a load of laundry like you normally would. After you are done, let the door stay slightly open this lets the washer dry out and not trap bacteria inside.
what you want to do is run a load with out cloths at all just around 2-3 large sponges that are dry. Choose the handwash or cottn%26amp;sturdy settings. Then leave the sponges and put in 1/2 cup of baking soda to every 2 tablespoons of ammonia or lemmon juice. 'Then you want to put some dish detergent. Take your washing detergent( for clothes not the dish soap) and fill dish detergent up to line 1. Pour it into the soap stream. Then press the extra rinso option and choose medium soil loads and then start the load. It may also help if you cut a lemon or lime in half and throw in into the washer after every 7 loads, this will prevent the odor.
    White vinegar
I'd also say use baking soda and run it through!
if you have a lint brush

dip it in bleach to kill mold and musty lint

wipe the door well with a bleach mixture soaked cloth

bleach is the best as far as mildew/mold killer

also try washing a load of clothes with bleach

    and last but not least

    get some Boraxo

clean with that it kills mold and mildew also....

for a washer to smell like that is unusual due to the drying process %26amp; Heat
    I would try bleach.
try adding a box of baking soda to your next wash....and leave the door open between washings
move it to another spot and see if water has settled underneath. Clean it with baking soda and white vinegar. That will take the smell and any stains away
add vinegar to a load of laundry wash as normal, do not put clothes in the washer when you are doing it.
Try running through an empty load but put a couple cups of vinegar in.
fill it with water and run baking soda through the wash cycle!

I've tried that and more and besides replacing the rubber gasket and having to pay the service call and unfortunately it will just come back, I'm screwed. My washer had a class-action lawsuit because of this same problem. Unfortunately, I have to live with it even though my machine stinks inside because of it. spray on vodka
Buy some scrubbing bubbles soap scum remover and spray it on there. Wait for about a minute and them you should be able to wipe it right off. I use this stuff in my shower and I don't have to scrub at all. It just melts it away. Just make sure you get the one in the spray buttle and not it the can.
Have you tried clorox? Usually this will kill mildew.
Be careful with bleach solution, because if it is too strong, it can dry and/or crack seals and gaskets. A Borax solution might be worth a try. There are also some products out there for mildew problems. I've heard good things about a product called Purewash, though I've never used it.

Can anyone give me advice on how to wash and remove mildew stains from stuffed toys?

I have an old (original 1995 or so) tickle-me-elmo doll that's in serious need of a bath. His tag says ';surface wash only,'; but given that he was originally purchased ';slightly used'; on Ebay and then put up with several years of life with college guys, I just don't think surface washing will cut it.

I've removed his voice box (He opens up with velcro and it was just tied in) and am thinking of throwing him in the washing machine. He has some mildew spots on his nose that I'm not sure what to do with. Stain remover? Some kind of disinfectant? Just see what washing does? and I'm also not sure how his eyes (plastic) will hold up.

Surely someone out there has experience washing these sorts of things. I'd appreciate any advice you have. Thanks! Can anyone give me advice on how to wash and remove mildew stains from stuffed toys?
Your best bet is to use vinegar. If it's sturdy enough that you think it will survive the washing machine, put it in a pillow case and use a gentle setting. Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.

If not, use a clean cloth dipped in vinegar and wipe it down. Sunlight is the best way to dry it. Sunshine kills mold spores. Make sure the toy is completely dry before putting it away so it doesn't mold again. Can anyone give me advice on how to wash and remove mildew stains from stuffed toys?
If you can take the voice box out, just throw him in the wash on a gentle/delicate/hand wash cycle...

    should work alright ;)

I have mildew in my washing machine. I need to remove.?

I have to do a load of laundry for my husband this morning. Any help would be appriecatedI have mildew in my washing machine. I need to remove.?
I would actually run a load of whites through with bleach, or at least a couple of towels that you don't care about. Running it empty will kill the mildew spores, but running with with something in there will also scrub it. Then just run your regular laundry through.

I get a bit of mildew in between the gaskets on my front loader, but it doesn't affect the clothes, so I don't let it bother me. It comes out when I do my once every couple of weeks bleach load.

From now on, leave the lid on your washer up between loads if possible, since that will allow everything to dry out and mildew can't grow without some moisture.I have mildew in my washing machine. I need to remove.?
I would pour some bleach in washer and add hot water fill to highest level and run longest cycle completely through {wash%26amp;rinse cycles}. Then run rinse cycle a couple of times to make sure you get all the bleach out.
    Run bleach through without clothes
There's a product called affesh that is designed for HE front loaders. It breaks up the residue built-up from detergents and lint, which is where the mold and mildew grow. It really works well. It looks like a hockey puck, and you toss one in the washer and run a cycle. That's it.

    http://www.apwagner.com/affresh.html
Try just running a load full of water and bleach with no clothes inside first. Bleach kills mold and mildew.

How do I clean out my washing machine? It's getting that mildew stink to it.?

Maybe run an empty load through with bleach instead of soap? Is that right? How do I clean out my washing machine? It's getting that mildew stink to it.?
All You have to do is run a cold wash cycle with 1-2 cups of clorox. And as everyone before stated, leave the door open when not in use. Leaving the door open helps the machine dry out completely when not in use, therefore doing away the sour smell. How do I clean out my washing machine? It's getting that mildew stink to it.?
I have researched this a bit and know the cause of the odor. The front load washers have a plastic tub which you can't see) outside of the inner tub. since these washers use so little water the detergent doesn't rinse away completely from the palstic tub and provide a breeding ground for bacteria. to get rid of it you have to run a load with bleach once a week and make sure you only use 2 tablespoons of detergent.

    Thing to use

    bleach

    your washing machine

    cleaning rags

    gloves

1Purchase a cheap gallon of bleach. The brand does not matter - they are all the same.

Step2Don the rubber gloves and some old clothes, just in case.

Step3Pour the whole gallon of bleach into your washing machine, and set it for the longest cycle. As the tub fills with HOT water, use the rags to wipe down the well for fabric softener (if applicable) and around the upper edges of the tub and into any crevices you find. (Hint: This is also a good time to wipe the dust and dirt from the lid and around the knobs.)

Step4Throw the rags into the washer, and turn it off once it is full. Allow it to sit for an hour, then turn back on to run the cycle. You should have a fresh-smelling machine that looks nice, too!
I usually set the wash level to the lowest setting. I add about half a box of Arm %26amp; Hammer Baking Soda and let the machine go through all of the cycles. Also, leave the lid up between washes. It takes that mildew smell out of mine. Hope this helps you. Good Luck. :)
Is it a front-loading washer? If it is, you have to leave the door open all the time to avoid the stink. Run a load of wash and then leave it open when it's not in use, it will lose the mildew smell pretty quickly.
do a normal wash, in the final rinse add 2 cups of white vinegar, that will deodorise the machine and your clothes, do this at least once a month, it's safe for clothes , machine and your health
Small load. At the rinse cycle one - two cups baking soda in the water. Ok for clothes and eliminates odor in anything. Also works great in the dishwasher on the rinse cycle
Yes, that will help. But start keeping your machine's door open after a wash. I keep ours open for about two hours before closing. One of my cyber friends never closes hers.
You should run the bleach through at least once a week.
a cycle with baking soda, then leave top open to air dry, to prevent mildew
try this, you will like the results.

  • How do you remove mildew smell from towels when repeated washing just isn't working?

I like using color-safe bleach. It usually works to remove the smells. If you've already tried this and it hasn't worked, then try washing them with a cup or two of white vinegar, and use hot water if you can. Sometimes hanging them outside in the sun after the regular dryer cycle seems to help. I think the main cause of the smell is from not being completely dry when they get put away. How do you remove mildew smell from towels when repeated washing just isn't working?
You can try the European way: Put them outside in the fresh air on a cloth hanger for a couple of days. How do you remove mildew smell from towels when repeated washing just isn't working?
I wash using detergeant + 1/2 cup baking soda (1 cup if it's a top loader) in the wash water and 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse (1 cup if top loader). Wash regular cycle with cold water. It always works the first time.
I use sportzyme. I got it at http://www.norwexonline.com

It's a product made by Norwex Enviro Products that removes the organic matter (in your case mould or bacteria) that is causing the offensive smell. It's so good, it takes the smell out of my husbands horrible hockey equipment! You just spray the towels, and let it dry. If there are lots of towels, I would even try putting a half a cup in the rinse cycle.
I put 1/2 a qt bottle of ammonia. Stay away tho'
wash in cold water don麓t add any fabric softener and hang outside in the fresh air
try adding pine sol to the detergent when in the washer, I didn't thnk it woreked but it does and don't forget the fabric softner too.
Besides white vinegar in the rinse, try a little bleach in the wash cycle, along with the soap.

Should I put Bleach mixed with water to clean mold and mildew on the shower curtain in washing machine?

I worry about the mold will contaminate my wasing macine and colthes.Should I put Bleach mixed with water to clean mold and mildew on the shower curtain in washing machine?
Buy a new one. They're like $3.00. Cleaning the old one isn't worth it.Should I put Bleach mixed with water to clean mold and mildew on the shower curtain in washing machine?
I would recommend treating the shower curtain with dilute bleach, and scrubbing it with a brush to remove the majority of the mold and mildew.

Then launder it in the machine with detergent and a cup of bleach.

You shouldn't have any problems afterwards.
YOU should scrub the ';crap'; out of the shower curtain with a paste of baking soda and salt. Then place it into the washing machine and let it ';fill up.'; Do not wash the curtain right away, let it soak in the bleach for a while. Then you should turn the washing machine on and ';progress'; will be in order.

Can folliculitis be caused by or spread by mildew in a washing machine?

My son, husband and I have been diagnosed with folliculitis at different times and on different places of our bodies (scalp, eyes, chin, nose, legs, arms) over the last 9 months. They have not been able to obtain a culture that identifies bacteria or fungus! We are trying or have tried every type of treatment. We are pretty fastidious people and do not have a pool or hot tub. We own a maytag neptune front loading washer that has had known problems with mildew...the manufacturerer is facing class action law suits. The problem is supposed to be corrected by running bleach with hot water through the machine periodically which we do as often as we dare. There is still mildew buildup! Anyway we would like to solve and eliminate this connection if there is one! We are looking into a new washing machine$$$$ Any ideas would be appreciated! Can folliculitis be caused by or spread by mildew in a washing machine?
I have only some experince in a microbiology lab. But, I would guess no, I dont think infected follicles would be caused by mildew, but more likely by bacteria, which is different. Do you notice that your washer leaves your towels stinky? That happens to me when I dont get them into the dryer until to late, but Im lazy like that. Maybe it could be an irritating soap; too harsh of a soap could wipe out the normal bacteria on your skin, letting less common ones proliferate, which could cause follicle infections. Can folliculitis be caused by or spread by mildew in a washing machine?
follicle can effectively be treated with antibiotics. this bacterial infection is in the staph family. be careful because different forms of staph are spreading rapidly. MRSA is the bad one, and alot of people are battling this. read up on these bacterial infections. alot of info on the net Report Abuse

Cold water wash with 3 ounces of clear amonia.

The rinse cycle will remove all traces of the amonia.

no soap necessary. My ski clothes have a mildew smell. I have washed with vinegar, but they still smell. Can't be dry cleaned.
Hang them outside on a sunny day, or in front of an open window, if you can't hang them outside.
wash it a couple times. use bleach if you can. use downy simple pleasures if you can
Oxi-Clean (sp?) works really well for mildew smell. If you don't want to go that route, add some baking soda to your wash after letting the clothes sit in a full load of water and cup of white vinegar mix for about an hour.

Try using baking soda through the wash cycle with hot water. Hopefully, this should work. Good Luck! I hate it when smells linger through the whole house.
    wash it out without clothes
First suggestion, whip up on your maid for laundering her dirty crew socks without detergent,,,LOL

Run the cycle with no clothing, but a healthy dose of bleach.

Monitor the lint filter and or anything left behind when you do run a load of clothing... IE: that pack of Bleu Cheese left in the pocket of your jeans,,,smiles.

You can also replace hoses, the minor filter in the inlet hose, check the drain hose for debris, and perhaps around the machine for anything not associated with laundering.

Never leave the lid open, and if you have cats, monitor their bathroom habits if their litter boxes happen to be in close proximety to the machine.

    Rev. Steven

    More can be found in my article, ';101 reasons to shower often, launder clothing after even a single short term wearing, keep any hamper covered, and NEVER leave laundry unattended for days at a time, in the machine after laundering.';
run a cycle of bleach and water. then run a cycle with baking soda and water this should rid it of the mildew smell. also check underneath and behind the washer to insure there are no leaks possibly causing the mildew smell
I think it is the time to chnage it.
you should run your washer with a cup of bleach or javex in a full load, with no clothes in it of course (lol), and don't leave wet clothes in the washer too long if it can be helped, even if you take them out asp and lay them on the dryer until you can get back to them and leave your washer door open it will circle air in,(if your worried about cats try putting a book there or something so air is getting in, i have 2 cats and they never go in the washer,(make too much noise and that would disturb their sleep, lol)

Help !! how do i remove mildew from washing machine rubber seals?

Try Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover Spray. Spray it on wait a few mins and then just wipe off. It worked a treat on mine and in the dispenser drawer as well were mould had appeared. You can get it in most Supermarkets but I got mine last week in Tescos and it was 拢1.97 a bottle.

Hope this helpsHelp !! how do i remove mildew from washing machine rubber seals?
Lemme guess... Neptune? I finally ditched mine for a Speed Queen. But I was told to run dishwasher detergent (not dishsoap) through a cycle with one old towel in it. Sure did work. Then you have to leave the door open, which burns out the light in it. Also, I got a new bootseal free. Report Abuse
Help !! how do i remove mildew from washing machine rubber seals?
i usually run my machine on the hottest setting and just pour a lot of bleach into the machine barrel before closing the door/lid. remember, don't put any clothes in the machine during this cycle.

    this always does the trick.
You must have either a Maytag Neptune (MAV5500), Frigidaire or Kenmore front load washer. Your problem is quite common for a machine that is 3-7 years old. The mildew is formed by water that doesn't completely drain after your cycle is complete.

If you simply clean the boot (rubber seal) with bleach, you could risk bleach-spotting your clothes. I recommend that you wipe out the seal with a towel and then run an empty load with bleach. After the cycle is complete, wipe out the boot with a towel. Then leave the door open 1-2 inches after each load. You shouldn't have any more problems as long as you keep the door slightly opened and the boot fairly dry.
Boil wash use washing soda its cheap and very powerful it aslo will clean out your drain after the machine has flushed it out of the system.
On a boil wash with a bit of bleach in the machine.
Unplug the machine's plug from the wall receptacle first. Then wipe everywhere with a vinegar-soaked rag, then wipe off with a clean damp cloth. Then plug the machine back in again.
add lemon juice and salt , leave for 5-10 min麓s then rinse with cold water
Bit of bleach spray, then wipe off with kitchen paper.Or try vinegar.
The best way to remove mildew is to use Clorox-- I don't know if the seals can be reached--maybe the water with Clorox will flow over the area. I use Clorox for removing mildew from everything from the sides of my house to the deck to the bath room shower stall. DO NOT MIX CLOROX WITH ANY THING ELSE AS IT WILL CAUSE A NOXIOUS FUME THAT CAN CAUSE BREATHING PROBLEMS!

JUST DILUTE IT WITH WATER ONLY. I would dilute this with water to right strength to remove the mildew. Hope this washing machine seals can be reached to clean with the Clorox and water.

  • I wash my sports bras in hot water BUT as soon as I begin to sweat they really stink..like mildew?

If they have a mildew smell, that is because there is live mold in them. The only way to get rid of the smell is kill the mold. Killing the mold? Easy! Just let them sit in a sink full of warm water and one cup of white vinegar for about an hour. Then wash as normal. That should solve the problem.I wash my sports bras in hot water BUT as soon as I begin to sweat they really stink..like mildew?
Are you washing them in a front loading washing machine? If you are using a front loading washing machine, that smell probably is mildew. Whenever you keep the door closed on a front loading washing machine, the moisture in the tub cannot dry out and will develop mildew. You have to keep the door slightly ajar on a front loading washing machine. You also have to ';clean'; the tub. The cheapest way to do that is to use some unsweetened lemon-flavored drink mix in a hot water wash cycle. There is a product called ';Smelly Washer Cleaner'; (developed by an appliance repairman) that is sold on the internet for this purpose.I wash my sports bras in hot water BUT as soon as I begin to sweat they really stink..like mildew?
Root cause is toxins inside your body. Drink plenty (at least 5 to 6 liters ) of water to flush out all the impurities from your system every day. That way your sweat does not smell.

The foods that we eat ( man made) produce lots of toxins into our system. That is one reason our mouths stink. The smell does not come out of the mouth. ( brushing does not help for too long ). As a matter of fact, the smell comes out of our stomach. If you drink plenty of water, your mouth does not smell either.
Put white vinegar in with the detergent. I put it in the bleach tray.

What you are smelling is the accumulation of soap that does not fully rinse out. Use warm water and cold rinse not hot.
Add one cup of baking soda to warm wash water. Let soak for one Hr. wash %26amp; rense and ,if possible, hang to dry in direct sun light. They will smell fresh like new.
try using amonia on them poor about a cup over them in washer an wash in hot w/your reg detergent if there all white you could bleach them but dont use amonia an bleach together
How do you dry them? If at one time you let them sit wet for a prolonged amount of time then they will develop a mildewy smell.
I would throw those bras out and get new ones.

How do I stop the mildew smell in my front load washing machine?

In between washes when the door is closed a mildew aroma builds up in the machine. Sometimes after a wash and rinse cycle the clothes have a slight smell to them. We have tried pouring bleach down the floor drain in our laundry room, but it keeps coming back. How do I stop the mildew smell in my front load washing machine?
    The instruction manual for my LG front load washer says, ';...remove all clothing and close the door... add liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment... press the Tub Clean option and press start... after cycle is complete leave the door open to dry...';

It doesn't say if it uses hot or cold water, but in the maintenance section it says to run through a complete wash cycle with hot water to clean the interior of the washer. Some of the newer front load machines have this ';Tub Clean'; option because of the tendency to have water sitting in the drum after a cycle. All of these other answers have good points like bleach and leaving the door open. I guess this is the one downside to having a front loading washing machine. How do I stop the mildew smell in my front load washing machine?
The smell is from the fact that front-loading washers always have a small amount of water in them after a cycle. Leaving the washer closed between loads creates humidity inside the machine, which then mildews the interior of the machine.

The simplest solution is to leave the door open after using it (which my front loader instructions recommend). This probably saves wear and tear on the door seals too.

To get rid of the current smell, run a cold brief cycle with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, or oxi-clean or a cup of vinegar or a half-cup of borax.

My last suggestion I'm a bit cagey about. If you put a spoonful of something antifungal in the machine between loads, you wouldn't have a smell, but you don't want anything corrosive. Leaving bleach in your machine between loads would be a bad idea, as it could hurt the machine components. Same goes for hydrogen peroxide, oxi-clean and even vinegar. And, it needs to be in solution so it will mix with the water left in the machine...

...the only thing I can think of is a homemade solution of borax and water. Use 1 cup of borax to 1 qt of hot water. Mix well and store in a bottle. Put about 1/4 cup in the washer after you remove the clothes. BTW, borax is an excellent clothes brightener, water softener, and deodorizer. And it's cheap. And it makes a great bathtime water softener too. Keep it away from children, as it's poisonous.
Use vinegar through the machine ..also with your clothes..you can also put a small dish with baking soda in it and leave it in the machine overnight ....it should absorb any further smell...you can leave the bowl with the baking soda for several night s as well to keep the problem at a minimal
perhaps the simplest solution would be just to buy a product that gets rid of the smell rather than making your own. Do some research on a product called ';purewasher'; which seems to come highly recommended from different departments.
Run a load of hot water (no clothes) with 2 cups of white vinegar. The vinegar will absorb the mildew smell. Also, add a cup of vinegar to your laundry. It will not only get rid of the smell, it will remove any soap residue (which attracts dirt and odors).
I haven't a clue, but I'm giving you a star, since I have the same problem with our front load machine..hopefully we'll find out.
Have you tryed leaving the door open? I know of other people how have the same problem.

How can i get rid of the mildew smell in my washing machine?

Hello Sharon, Run your washing machine on the highest setting %26amp; add bleach. Do the same again but this time add vinegar, this will rid the smell. you can buy things in shops-- Tesco - etc, to put in you're washer, just like you can for the dishwasher.
put it on a hot wash with a pack of soda crystals in the drum or white vinegar
    jefex. cloren
Buster Kitchen Fresh, 拢2 odd from supermarkets, I swear by it.
mine does this from time to time

    empty the fitter

its a smelly job but needs to be done
Clean out the filter then a hot wash with soda crystals or vinegar then leave the door open to let the air circulate
Buy ';Chlorophyll'; from health food store. Pour some into the washing machine as it fills with water, %26amp; let it run a cycle. Your washer will be odor free.
    Good morning, Sharon,

If you are sure your filter is clean and that there is not a dead mouse under your washer then all you need to do is bring water level above the bottom of the washer tub a few inches, then add a few cups of liquid bleach and let it sit overnight. Be sure you close the cover after adding the bleach.

The next morning, turn the washer on and let it finish its cycle with no laundry inside.

    That will do it...
I've run a hot cycle with bleach in it or vinegar. Both will kill the smell.

To avoid the smell in the future, keep the lid/door open in order for it to dry in the future and not get this smell again.

Why has the door seal on my washing machine grown lots of mildew. How can I remove it?

It is in a constricted space at the side of the house. There is a door leading outside right next to it. We always have 2 little windows open in the area. The tumble dryer is on a shelf above it. Admittedly both machines are used a great deal. At intervals I put the hottest wash cycle on without any powder to clear machine. I have tried to get rid of stains with anti-mould spray but it is not having any effect! Why has the door seal on my washing machine grown lots of mildew. How can I remove it?
I also have a front-loading washer and my manufacturer told me NOT to close the door when the washer is empty. Just push it closed, but still open enough for air to enter. I have had my washer for 2 1/2 years and I do not have any mold. They did tell me that I could, if I didn't follow the instructions. The only way I've ever seen mold get completely gone, is with bleach. Put on some gloves and pour some bleach and rub it in with your fingertips. Rinse it VERY well before adding clothes, otherwise you are liable to ruin some clothes. Good luck!!Why has the door seal on my washing machine grown lots of mildew. How can I remove it?
you could try to scrap the stuff off
Put a small fan aimed to exhaust air out of your small windows. Use a mixture of 20% bleach to 80% water in a spray bottle and spray it directly onto the mold. You may have to do this often, but it will control the mold. You need not wipe the mold away, it will disolve on its own.
The mildew comes from bacterea in the water. The best way to (try to) remove it would be with a cleaning device that uses steam. Some toothpaste may do the trick if it hasn't been there for too long, otherwise steam is the only solution and it's still possible that some mildew will stay on...

My washing machine has a mildew smell and I am not sure how to get rid of it. Help!?

It is a front load machine if that makes a difference. My washing machine has a mildew smell and I am not sure how to get rid of it. Help!?
i would try running an empty load on max, with two cups of bleach instead of detergent..its a temporary fix but it will be ok for a month or so again...just run it empty a second time to make sure the bleach residue is all washed out before putting clothes back in it.My washing machine has a mildew smell and I am not sure how to get rid of it. Help!?
Run your washing machine in rinse cycle with 2 cups of vinegar.
I'd dump a box of baking soda in the machine then run an empty load - that should get rid of the mildew smell, and won't overwhelm you with the smell of bleach!
Use bleach and baking soda. 2cups of bleach and a whole box of baking soda should clean up the mildew smell.
I would try bleach. Make sure you use hot water on the largest load setting your machine has. I would use several (2 to 3) cups of bleach. Once you are finished, run an empty load (no laundry) still using the hot water setting to make sure you get the bleach out of the machine so you do not accidently bleach the clothes that go in the next load.
Like mostly everyone said, run an empty load with some bleach on full power. More importantly though, many people over look that there might be water in their outgoing hose that was never fully emptied. The excess water at times can cause that mildew smell you're having. All that water lingering around until the next wash and not really evaporating plus the cool temperature (usually like that of peoples' basements) are a great combination for a mildew type environment. The amount of water if any left behind will of course depend on the machine you have since some pump water out of the machine much better than others.
Run it thru the normal cycle using a cup of bleach and hot water.
The problem is the gaskets on front loading machines. They are notorious for remaining wet/ moist between loads which encourages mold growth. Try taking a towel and drying off the gaskets between loads and leaving the door open to allow the gaskets to dry better.
make sure you dry the tub out after each use and leave the door unlatched. t
I agree with the first poster about the bleach.

After you have done that, you have to prevent the mildew from growing again. It sounds like there is some lint stuck somewhere that is holding water, then mildewing because of lack of air circulation.

If you can, try to find where the link is sticking.

If that isn't possible, you can try leaving the door open a crack, or all the way (depending on your laundry setup) so the machine can dry between loads.
a bottle of vinegar and don't close the lid when you are not using it
    The bleach wash will work.

After you do a load of laundry leave the door open a little. This will help prevent the return of the mildew.
I have this problem with mine on occassion. It is due to the lid being left closed between washings and not getting a chance to dry out.

Run a load without laundry in it and use 2 cups of baking soda and a cup of vinegar. I use one of the following essential oils as well as these are antimicrobial: tea tree, clove oil or eucalyptus.
You can try running an empty load with bleach or vinegar. In our house we cant use chemicals, so I use vinegar. It will help, but may not eliminate the problem.
The right way of cleaning your machine is to run a full load with 2 gallons of vinegar, just make sure to add the vinegar when the machine is not full yet.
Household ammonia is great for getting smells out of lots of things. When I've accidentally forgotten a load of laundry in the washer for a few days in the summer I fill the machine up again with water (temp. doesn't seem to matter) ,detergent and a cup of plain old household ammonia. That seems to take the smell out.I 've even used ammonia on costumes I was hired to take care of on a cruise ship show. The costumes had sequence, spandex and you name it on them but they stunk to high heavens. So I plunged them into a bucket of water and ammonia. It worked.Good luck.

I have a horrible mildew smell coming from washing machine. Clothes are fine when washed.?

Clothes have not been smelling.. It is in my tub apperently. I cannot seem to get it out. Please help if you know of any soloutions !I have a horrible mildew smell coming from washing machine. Clothes are fine when washed.?
try running a cycle without cloths in it just bleach.I have a horrible mildew smell coming from washing machine. Clothes are fine when washed.?
Hi, I had this very same problem and ironically my friend is a Maytag man. The majority of people who tried running a empty load with baking soda, the same you use for refrigerator odor, seemed to have the problem resolved. Vinager also helps but left my machine smelling like a pickle. Good luck!
First - check for leaks under the machine %26amp; behind it. A tiny leak can leave enough dampness to cause a mildew smell. Second run an empty wash with hot water. Third if you still have the smell, run another empty wash adding baking soda %26amp; vinegar to the water. That is what it took to fix my smelly washer a few months ago. When I read the baking soda %26amp; vinegar solution it was reccommended to not overload the machine or leave clothes lying in it for a long time after washing to prevent it from happening again.
just simply unscrew the hoses from the back of your washer, and let out all the excess water.. the water stays in your hose for periods of time, which leads to mildew smell..(be sure to turn of your supply line before removing the hose)
Just leave the door open a few days or use a fan if you are in a hurry. It must dry out between washing that are spaced out by 24 hours!
Look under and behind the machine. I'd be willing to bet there was some standing water underneath and it created mildew. Should you find that, that's your problem, it is easily cleaned up with bleach %26amp; water solution.
Leave it open after use so that it dries out completely, and maybe run an empty load with some vinegar in it.
run a wash cycle without anything but soap 1/4 cup, and bleach 1/2 cup. and when you finish the wash in the future leave the lid open until the next day at least. what is happening is the moisture inside the machine isn't drying out. good luck.

there are any number of things you can do. You can fill it up with water, add bleach and wash (without clothes)

I like to add those little bath beads that you buy at Christmas. They have a nice smell to them.

You can do the same with white vinegar. How do you remove a mildew odor from a washing machine?
Just fill the washer up with one cup of bleach and hot water, and run like a normal load. This should workHow do you remove a mildew odor from a washing machine?
my grandmothers method was to put no morethan 12 oz. of coke in the machine every 2 or 3 months. pepsi won't work, and it can't be diet coke. this has worked excellent for me for 25 years
I had this problem and called the repair man. He sai to put in a few drops of dawn detergent and run it through. It worked for awhile but came back.
Run a load of rags with a cup of borax. It gets out smells of all kinds. You can also use a cup of baking soda added to the water in your next load.
bleach OR ammonia -- but don't mix chemicals -- can be dangerous
run the washer without clothes, but add vinegar
Add one cup white vinegar to the washer and run full cycle.
Put your machine on a 90潞c program run this first with a cup of vinegar, then do the same again this time with a cup of bleach, I have to say , I use a sterilizing solution rather than bleach, I use the sterilizing solution for sterilizing new born baby麓s bottles. It cleans the machine and sterilizes at the same time
i also do the one cup white vinegar to the washer and run full cycle.

I removed the AC vents for cleaning. I found mold or mildew inside and washed them. How to remove from ducts?

Would there be meldew on ducts if there was on vents? How to clean my ac system?I removed the AC vents for cleaning. I found mold or mildew inside and washed them. How to remove from ducts?
Mildew is usually more prevelent at the vent than inside the duct. The cold air from the duct meets with the warm air of the room at the vent. This can cause a bit of condensation and mildew.

Mold and mildew is a very common and occurs everywhere in nature. People tend to overreact and freak out about it in their house. Most mildew is harmless. The only way to get it out of ducts is to hire a profession duct cleaning company. The salesman will tell you how terrible mold is and that you need to have them cleaned every year. My house is 50 years old and the ducts have never been cleaned. Never had any health issues.

I would just clean the vent with a little windex and forget about the ducts.I removed the AC vents for cleaning. I found mold or mildew inside and washed them. How to remove from ducts?
there are companies that can come out and clean your ductwork with special tools and a sanitizer solution. To purchase the tools yourself would be expensive for the occassional use of one home's needs. For a normal home, duct cleaning costs about $55 per each vent, plus $250 to clean the heating/AC unit. It sounds like you also need to install a dehumidifier/vapor control to your heating/cooling duct system to prevent reoccurrance of the mold and mildew.
    windex
Vinegar or diluted bleach. Vinegar is acetic acid and that kills mold. So does bleach, but be sure to ventilate very well - the fumes are nasty!
