I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?

I use the machine at least every other day, but at least twice a week this odor is so bad it comes out into the living areas. What could be causing this and how do I fix it?I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?
If the problem is not coming from the discharge hose, the problem could be in the drain itself, and the smell can be gasses backing up from the sewer. Drains have a 'P' or 'U' trap which retains a small amount of water that prevents sewer gasses from escaping the drain. If the trap is leaky and doesn't hold the water, gasses can periodically be ';belched' into your home, causing the odor. If the odor occurs exclusively when you're not using the washer, this is likely the problem.I have a horrible smell coming from the washing machine drain pipe. It is a strong mildew type smell.?
It could be the pipe the other thing it could be though is a cracked drain pipe water in the walls and mold is growing?. I had an issue with this a few years back and one of my water lines had cracked and was basically a mist was coming in the wall and forming a perfect breeding ground for mold. You may only smelling it when you do the wash becuase the hot water is making a steam and the mold spores is flowing if you can maybe take a look at the pipe make sure it isn't cracked and there are no leaks. If it is okay dump some vinegar down the pipe this should hopefully help with the stence.
Could also pour a cup of bleach down the drain pipe. If you have really low humidity, you could be drying out the water in the trap that should be installed on the drain, allowing sewer gases to escape. Then again, if it's an older house, maybe they didn't put a trap on the line.
Laundry machinery mechanic here. You need to have the pipe brushed, then add a degreaser down the pipe, then run your washing mahine, i know what your talking a bout, i have fixed this many times for laundromats.
I have the same problem coming out of my bathroom sink. I get rid of it by dumping in a 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let sit for a 1/2 hour then rinse with boiling hot water.

I think rubber has the solution. The trap is a necessary part of the plumbing and probably it was not put in. Try sealing the hole with a rag if you do not want to properly seal the sewer gases with a p trap.
I used Drain Care, from Home Depot. Eats away the bacteria in the pipes.
