What happens is that over a period of time, soap and softener builds up a film on the rubber door boot, and begin to mildew. So wash the door boot off with bleach and from now on try to wipe the boot off when done with your laundry, and leave the door partially open. If I knew what brand it was I might be able to help further. As some manufactures have come up with solutions.

Good Luck

All the answers here to this question are great. In addition, take out the ';dispenser'; drawer and clean it well with hot water and some bleach. The drawer often has mildew growth on the underside from fabric softener and detergents. You could also run a load empty on hot water with some chlorine bleach after having cleaned the door, drawer, and lint trap.
Clean the filters and door seals, and leave the door open after doing a wash. Check your machine's manual for further details of things like where the filters are located.
i always wipe dry the door and seal after washing

there is a product on the market to help with front loader odours, sorry i can't remember the name
